A professional gambler and businessman from the US has set a new world record after he spent £120,000 (NZ$238,284) on the most expensive bottle of champagne ever at an exclusive London club at the weekend.
Don Johnson — also known as the Champagne King — racked up a bill of £170,000 (NZ$337,568) when he visited Park Lane's OneForOne nightclub on Sunday night, the UK's Telegraph reports.
The 49-year-old American who was in town to visit his rock star friend Jon Bon Jovi and had heard that the £950-a-year members club had just commissioned the biggest bottle of sparkly ever made — the Armand De Brignac Midas — which weighs 45kg and equivalent to 40 regular bottles of champagne.
After polishing off a six litre bottle of champagne worth £25,000 (NZ$49,643) Mr Johnson whipped the crowd into a frenzy with his big purchase.
"Everyone was gathered round his table and he was on the microphone singing Bon Jovi songs, screaming I love London," the club's floor manager Nik Krasniqi said.
"He was hugging the bottle and everyone in the club was going wild.
"His goal is to be the biggest spender ever in nightclubs all over the world… He likes to party very, very hard. He had the microphone and was screaming Don Mother F---ing Johnson over and over."
The businessman's lifestyle manager, Sophie Raibin, said Mr Johnson often likes splash out and shower his guests with his generosity.
"He has spent millions of pounds on champagne in his life, he gives away and just wants people to have fun," Ms Raibin said.
"His favourite thing is the microphone, he is known for it and he loves it. He is very good at getting a crowd going. You've got to see it to believe it."
She adds that Mr Johnson does not like to drink champagne because he hasn't acquired the taste, and usually prefers drinking vodka.
The previous record for the most expensive bottle of champagne was a 15L bottle named Armand De Brignac Nebuchadnezzar, which was purchased by an anonymous customer for £80,000.
