Auckland is seeking to lift regional exports by six per cent annually as part of a 10-year plan to boost its economic performance.
The Economic Development Strategy, launched on Friday, also aims to lift the region's GDP by five per cent annually and improve productivity by two per cent year on year.
Mayor Len Brown says a key part of the plan is to look at global opportunities.
"This strategy guides Auckland in its economic transformation, away from being a domestically focused service economy, towards a high-value export economy.
"We need to be less focused on things like property speculation and more focused on increasing our base of productive and tradeable sectors," he said.
Steps had already been taken to put some of the plan into action, including the rollout of ultra-fast broadband and new transport initiatives.
