An English couple have been catapulted onto the nation's rich list overnight after they won a lotto jackpot of £148 million ($288 million).

Gillian, 40 and Adrian Bayford, 41, took out the EuroMillions jackpot on Friday after the prize had been rolled over 14 times making it the second largest prize in UK lotto history, the Independent reports.

The couple say the win won't go to their heads with Mr Bayford, who part-owns a music shop, planning to continue working.

Mrs Bayford was putting their son to bed when her husband found out they had won the jackpot.

"I was trying to tell her we had won the lottery and she was telling me to keep the noise down," Mr Bayford said.

Ms Bayford said the win came at a good time, adding that she had recently fretted after spending some money on clothes for her children.

The pair said they plan to continue living in Suffolk and want to give their children a normal life.

Their newfound wealth places them amongst the UK's richest, above music icons Sir Tom Jones and Eric Clapton.
