Oscar Niemeyer, internationally acclaimed architect and the man credited with reshaping the look of Brazil's buildings, has passed away aged 104. He died in Rio de Janeiro on Wednesday, after battling kidney and stomach problems since early November. Born Oscar Ribeiro de Almeida Niemeyer Soares Filho, on December 15, 1907, Niemeyer rose to global fame as one of the most talented architects of his generation. Renowned for his love of curves, reinforced concrete and unconventional, abstract patterns, Niemeyer was crucial to the design of Brazil's capital Brasília in the 1950’s, and has remained active and influential ever since then.
